Digital Design Sprint

Designing digital knowledge transfer together

During the Politics for Tomorrow Digital Design Sprint stakeholders from politics, technology and civil society developed ideas for how a Digital Inspiration Platform for co-creative work in politics and administration could look like. The format provided an experimental framework in which methods from Human Centered Design and Design Thinking were applied under the professional supervision of our interdisciplinary moderation team.

The Design Sprint is an event format that offers the opportunity to use innovative methods in a common learning space. The design process consists of four main phases: discover, structure, design, adapt. The participants will work in small groups. Each group becomes a “Design Team”, the participants understand themselves as a real team, which jointly designs a valuable service or a product for a particular target group.

Questions are identified during the “discovery phase”. In the next step, findings are structured and a concrete challenge is collectively defined. During the design phase, creative ideas and prototypes are developed through a structured exchange with others. During the adaptation phase, solutions can be tested directly by the participants of the other teams and prepared for iteration.

The P4T Digital Design Sprint achieves a threefold aim of inspiration, exchange and empowerment that enables people from politics and administration to make specific content and processes of their work co-creative and innovative.

Inspiration – Seeing what is possible

Digital transformation and new forms of work offer interesting opportunities for policy-making and, at the same time, also challenges. Through the P4T Digital Design Sprint, people from politics and administration learn what is behind this fashionable jargon and how the new trends can be seen on existing platforms such as the OECD Observatory for Public Sector Innovation or the Observatory of the Centre for Social Impact. In brief inputs, international examples of innovative (social and technological) policy design will be presented.

Exchange – Learning from each other

Increasing social complexity puts the established practice of policy making to the test. Complex future problems can hardly be tackled without the involvement of different stakeholder groups (eg experts, civil society, industry). The P4T Digital Design Sprint methods from the field of design were developed to enable people from different disciplines and with different backgrounds to achieve goal-oriented collaboration.

Empowerment – Developing new options for action

Living together in a globalized and digital world leads to extreme change dynamics that test the limits of existing political instruments. At the same time, the impetus from civil society is increasing along with the demand for more transparency, participation, accountability and communication. Therefore, new approaches are required that meet the changing needs of policy-making and open up new fields of action. The Digital Design Sprint offers a learning space in which innovative methods from the field of Design Thinking are applied.

Context of the P4T Digital Design Sprint

The P4T Digital Design Sprint is part of a higher-level project that aims to showcase innovative approaches to policy-making and bring them into view. The plan is to implement a Digital Inspiration Platform, which is meant to serve as a knowledge resource for innovative policy-making in the German-speaking world. This is carried out in cooperation with similar initiatives from Switzerland (staatslabor) and Austria (Innovation in Politics Institute). The technical implementation of the platform is supported by the Hans Sauer Foundation and the Heinrich Boell Foundation. The focus of the platform is to gather innovative case studies from politics and administration in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and make them visible. These can be supplemented, for example, by a bibliography on the subject of innovative policy-making and a set of methods for concrete application
